Report Cover

A recent European report on Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) offers an in-depth overview of the economic contribution of tourism across EU and EFTA nations. It emphasizes the increasing significance of standardized, comparable, and high-quality data for accurately assessing tourism’s true impact. The report’s findings stress that without robust data systems, implementing effective tourism policies and achieving sustainable development in Europe remain unattainable.

A new European report on Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) offers a crucial insight into how tourism is measured, understood and managed across the continent. Developed within the European statistical system, the report presents national data from EU and EFTA countries, providing one of the most advanced frameworks for analysing tourism’s economic role.

Tourism is not a single industry but a cross-sector activity that spans transport, accommodation, gastronomy, culture and services. This makes it difficult to measure using traditional statistics. The TSA framework addresses this challenge by integrating data from multiple sectors into a single system, allowing policymakers to understand tourism’s contribution to GDP, employment and economic output.

The report clearly shows that data is not just a technical tool but a strategic necessity for European tourism. Without reliable, comparable data, it is impossible to assess the true value of tourism, design effective policies, or monitor progress towards sustainability goals. Tourism Satellite Accounts enable countries to compare performance, identify trends and benchmark their development against others.

One of the key messages of the report is the need for harmonised data across Europe. While many countries already produce tourism statistics, differences in methodology and data availability still limit comparability. This creates challenges for cross-border cooperation, macro-regional strategies and EU-level policymaking. Strengthening data systems is therefore essential to support coordinated tourism development across Europe.

The importance of data is also directly linked to current EU priorities. Sustainable tourism, climate action and resilience all require measurable indicators. Data is needed to assess carbon emissions, monitor visitor flows, evaluate economic impact and understand social effects such as employment and community wellbeing. Without this evidence, sustainability risks remain a concept rather than a measurable reality.

The report also highlights how tourism data supports better decision-making at the regional and local levels. Destinations can use data to manage seasonality, distribute visitor flows, improve infrastructure planning and design, and develop targeted marketing strategies. For example, understanding the balance between domestic and international tourism or the economic contribution of different segments allows destinations to plan more effectively and reduce risks.

For European tourism as a whole, the message is clear: better data leads to better tourism. As the sector becomes more complex and competitive, destinations that invest in data, analytics and monitoring systems will be better positioned to respond to change, attract visitors and ensure long-term sustainability. In a context where the European Commission is increasingly focusing on implementation, indicators and measurable impact, Tourism Satellite Accounts provide a foundation for the future of tourism governance. They support evidence-based policymaking, strengthen transparency, and help align tourism with broader EU strategies such as the green and digital transition.

The report reinforces a critical shift: tourism is no longer managed based on assumptions or visitor numbers alone, but on data-driven insights that connect economic, environmental and social dimensions.
