New research from Ireland’s national tourism authority found that most visitors do not factor renewable energy infrastructure into their destination choice. Natural beauty remains the main driver of visitor satisfaction, with mountain areas the most sensitive.

The study revisited 2017 research and interviewed 1,262 domestic and overseas visitors in 24 locations between August and October 2025. Two in three visitors did not consider renewable energy infrastructure when choosing where to go, 61% of those who noticed it said it did not affect their enjoyment, 58% agreed that its benefits outweigh the negatives, and 42% said it would not affect future visits, which reflects stated intentions rather than confirmed behaviour.

Beauty and untouched nature ranked first for enjoyment across all areas and nationalities, and mountain landscapes recorded the most mentions of negative impact. For destinations, the findings suggest that energy projects and tourism can coexist where landscape quality is protected through careful siting and design, and that clear communication of the benefits could strengthen visitor support.
