The European Commission’s report, published on November 16, 2021, summarizes the outcomes of a two workshop rounds involving 115 stakeholders. These workshops, organized by independent experts on behalf of the European Commission, aimed to define specific actions and targets for the tourism transition pathway.
The workshops focused on three main themes: Green Transition, Digital Transition, and Resilient Transition. Experts led discussions on 27 transition pathway topics, proposing targets for 2030 and milestones for 2025 and 2022. The report highlights the benefits of achieving these targets, proposed actions for stakeholders, and potential funding sources.
Key outcomes include the identification of sustainable tourism indicators, the implementation of National Sustainable Tourism Schemes, and the aim for zero tourism transport emissions by 2050. The workshop underscored the importance of data-driven policy-making, environmental performance reporting, and the adoption of digital technologies to enhance efficiency and innovation in the tourism sector.
Overall, the workshops facilitated a collaborative approach to shaping a sustainable and competitive European tourism ecosystem, providing a roadmap for stakeholders to contribute to these ambitious goals.
