Plants make up 80% of the food Europeans eat, making plant health directly tied to food availability and prices. Climate change and trade put growing pressure on plants: the pine wood nematode, first found in the EU in Portugal in 1999, has since spread to Spain and France, forcing destruction of at-risk pine trees near outbreaks.
The campaign covers 27 EU countries plus pre-accession countries and Switzerland, offering advice such as not bringing plants home from outside the EU and checking plant passports when buying new plants.
