A joint DG AGRI and DG CONNECT webinar set out Commission plans to accelerate AI adoption in agrifood, including a marketplace for AI-based agricultural solutions and funding for agriculture-specific foundation models. Speakers pointed to advisory tools and precision farming as near-term gains, while EU uptake still lags other regions.

Barriers slowing adoption on European farms include lack of trust, vendor lock-in, cost concerns and interoperability gaps between platforms. The Commission is investing through Horizon Europe and dedicated AI factories in agriculture-specific foundation models trained on soil, weather and crop data.
The webinar, held on 19 March 2026, paired the agrifood session with a companion discussion on AI in climate monitoring, including the Destination Earth programme's AI-driven simulations for early warning.
