The European Commission has approved a €20 million Italian scheme to help agriculture and fisheries companies in Friuli Venezia Giulia cope with higher fuel and fertiliser costs, part of a wider EU framework responding to price spikes linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Aid is capped at €50,000 per company and will run until the end of 2026.

The scheme was cleared under the Middle East crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), adopted by the Commission in April 2026 to let member states cushion businesses in agriculture, fisheries and transport against the surge in fuel, fertiliser and energy prices triggered by the closure of a key Middle East shipping route. Support will take the form of direct grants and tax relief, calculated from each company's estimated consumption of fuel and, for farmers, fertiliser.

For small and medium Agri-Food businesses, schemes like this are a reminder that national and regional support can move faster than EU-level instruments when input costs spike suddenly, and that similar METSAF-based schemes are likely to appear in other member states over the coming months. Worth tracking for the Getting Support section as they are approved.
