The Pay-As-You-Throw project, funded by the Cohesion Fund (CF) under the THALIA Operational Programme, supports the implementation of local waste management plans by clusters of Local Authorities (LAs), aiming to promote the circular economy and reduce landfill waste through source separation, recycling, and reuse. Coordinated by the Department of Environment of Cyprus, it introduces a pricing policy based on prepaid bags or bins for residual waste, alongside infrastructure upgrades such as composters, recycling bins, and digital monitoring systems. Running from 2023 to 2028 with a total budget of EUR 25 million, its expected outcomes include increased recycling rates, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved waste sorting infrastructure, and greater public engagement in sustainable waste practices.
