FLOWS Green Karst is a pioneering, human-centric digital innovation that transforms sustainable tourism management through real-time data intelligence and worker empowerment. Deployed in Green Kars region, Slovenia, the system integrates IoT footfall sensors, multi-source data analytics, and co-designed dashboards to monitor visitor flows across tourism destination. By providing tourism providers and destination managers with actionable, real-time insights, FLOWS enables dynamic rerouting of tourist flows, reduces environmental strain, and ensures more balanced and sustainable distribution of tourism benefits.

What sets FLOWS apart is its deep commitment to Tourism 4.0 and Industry 5.0 principles: frontline workers and tourism providers are actively involved in the co-design and deployment process, turning them into empowered stewards of sustainable tourism. This not only improves job satisfaction and decision-making quality but also strengthens collaboration across the tourism ecosystem. FLOWS Green Karst supports the twin transition by combining digital innovation with environmental stewardship and social inclusion.

The solution builds on years of prior work in digital tourism and leverages advanced infrastructure. With a focus on scalability, data privacy, and sustainability, FLOWS is already operational and poised for broader deployment across Europe, offering a replicable model for smart, equitable, and resilient tourism in the digital age.

FLOWS Green Karst

The FLOWS Green Karst application is a joint initiative between Arctur, a technology and data integration expert and and initiator of Tourism 4.0 partnership, and RRA Green Karst, a regional tourism destination organisation in Slovenia, supported by tourism providers, local authorities, and frontline workers.

It deploys the FLOWS application — a real-time data analytics platform — to monitor tourism visitor flows across hiking trails and key cultural and natural sites in the ecologically sensitive Green Karst region. By integrating live data from IoT sensors with weather, traffic, and tourism statistics, satellite data, FLOWS delivers actionable insights that enable dynamic rerouting of tourists, prevent overcrowding, reduce environmental strain, and strengthen coordination across the tourism stakeholders.

Designed through co-creation, the system empowers users with data-driven decision-making tools, enhancing job quality, autonomy, and collaboration. Fully operational since 2025 as part of the SEISMEC project, FLOWS supports the transition by combining digital innovation with human-centric values, advancing sustainable, resilient, and equitable tourism management.
