GERAt is a national project linking Portugal’s Tourism Schools and regular schools to foster citizen-tourists. Rooted in territory, heritage, nature, gastronomy, and talent, it empowers young people to value their communities. Through interdisciplinary projects, events, and an educational game, GERAt makes tourism a driver of learning, citizenship, and sustainable development.

GERAt – Territory, Tourism and Talent
GERAt is a pioneering nationwide project, co-promoted by Turismo de Portugal and the Portuguese Directorate-General for Education, that builds a bridge between the Tourism Schools of Portugal and regular schools. The initiative aims to shape citizen-tourists who see their territory as a platform for learning, citizenship, and sustainable development.
Scope and Scale
Launched in 2023 with the participation of 12 schools, GERAt has expanded consistently: in 2024 it involved 39 school clusters, 46 classes, and around 925 students, culminating in a ranking of 40 interdisciplinary projects. By 2025, the initiative had been extended to secondary schools, mobilizing 65 schools and more than 1,300 students.
Pedagogical Approach
GERAt develops through projects rooted in the students’ own territories, mobilizing tangible and intangible heritage, natural resources, gastronomy, and local talents. The interdisciplinary design of these initiatives promotes creativity, sustainability, and a stronger sense of belonging.
National Event and Educational Game
The project culminates in regional stages and a national final, where students present their projects to a jury of tourism and education experts. These events also showcase the educational board game “GERAt – Territory, Tourism and Talent”, created with Science4You, which allows students to explore tourism-related subjects in a playful, interactive, and sustainable way.
Transformative Potential
GERAt consolidates an innovative educational model that positions schools as drivers of territorial development, empowering young people to act as active agents in valuing their regions. Tourism is no longer just an economic sector: it becomes a catalyst for citizenship, innovation, and social development.
