Slovenia had three of its destinations honoured at the Green Destinations Story Awards 2026: a zero-waste trail run in Bela Krajina, a local food network in Bohinj, and a multimedia storytelling project in Bled. The country also secured hosting rights for the global Green Destinations conference, to be held in Kranj this October.

Bela Krajina (3rd place, Environment & Climate) was recognised for the Lahinja Trail run, organised by Lahinja Landscape Park under a strict zero-waste commitment. Through a series of operational improvements, organisers now separately collect over 90% of waste generated by the event while cutting total waste by at least 30%, and by scheduling the race in November, they also help extend the region's tourist season into the shoulder period.

Bohinj (3rd place, Thriving Communities) won recognition for "From Fields to Forks," a project connecting local food producers, restaurants and consumers to strengthen local food self-sufficiency and improve access to locally sourced ingredients. Beyond reducing the carbon footprint tied to food supply chains, the initiative supports rural land use and cultural heritage while giving visitors more direct access to local culinary traditions.

Bled (3rd place, Business & Marketing) was honoured for "Beyond the Postcard," a multimedia storytelling project combining a film, a podcast, and a book, designed to encourage visitors to explore beyond the lake's most photographed viewpoints, discover lesser-known paths, and extend their stay, while reinforcing the destination's broader sustainability strategy and engaging the local community.

Alongside these wins, Kranj, a holder of the Slovenia Green Platinum label, was announced as host of the global Green Destinations conference this October at Brdo pri Kranju.
