On September 18, 2025, Malta became the 29th nation worldwide and the 6th in Europe to adopt the International Code for the Protection of Tourists (ICPT), underscoring its dedication to safeguarding traveler and consumer rights. This significant milestone was marked at the I Tourism Law Conference in Europe, hosted by the University of Malta, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and UN Tourism.
Key discussions at the conference revolved around sustainability, overtourism, short-term rental regulations, and consumer protection, with representatives from Malta, Croatia, and Andorra sharing valuable legislative insights. Highlighting the nation's proactive involvement, Dr. Ian Borg, Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of tourism law in ensuring safe and resilient destinations.
The conference also witnessed the signing of memoranda between UN Tourism and the International Forum of Travel and Tourism Advocates (IFTTA), solidifying commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism through legal avenues.
